You have search for different jobs, written your CV, sent it off to several companies and now have finally been called for a job interview – so how to do cross the final hurdle?
Know the basics
Make a note of all the relevant practical data such as the date, time and precise location of the interview and how to get there. Make sure you have gathered all the information you can on the company and know your CV inside out so that you may speak about it with ease.
Prepare responses to questions
Make a list of question interviewer may ask in certain areas e.g. Why do you want to work for this company?, Why are you interested in the renewable energy sector? What qualities would you bring to the company? etc.
Be on time
Arrive at the place of the interview a few minutes ahead of time.
Take care of your appearance
There are companies in which the appearance of their employees is very important which is why it is preferable to show up at the interview dressed formally without flamboyant makeup or hairstyles.
Be confident
You have been asked to for an interview because the interviewer thinks you have potential – this thought should give you confidence. Do not be overly concerned if you do not have much professional experience – most employers know that people require on-the-job training. However, you should demostrate your ability to learn quickly and show general enthusiasm to get started.
Let the interviewer take the initiative.
Shake hands if offered, sit when and where you are told and greet the interviewer by their name. Remember the names of the interviewers during the interview.
Sit naturally
Do not be too stiff or too reclined. Accompany your answers with non exaggerated hand gestures and try to avoid repetitious actions like touching your hair or earrings since these indicate nervousness and insecurity.
Take care with your tone of voice
Do not speak too quickly or rush to answer questions.
Maintain visual contact
Look at the interviewer’s eyes and try to smile slightly since a smile helps to create a relaxed and positive atmosphere. If there is more than one person interviewing you address both of them although the questions are being asked by only one.
Mind your language
Use vocabulary which is suitable to the position you are applying for. Try not to sound pompous but try to use some technical words. Use positive sentences which express confidence in yourself and motivation. Avoid using sentences with negative connotations like “the problem is…”
Do not lie.
Take into account that the person who is conducting your interview is not only prepared to evaluate your knowledge and potential but also your character. If they realize that you are trying to lie (and they will realize it) it will give a negative impression.
Ask questions
Take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions about the position. The ability to ask sensible questions is a skill most employers will look for.
Say goodbye in suitable manner
Thank your interviewer for their time and shake hands. Follow up your interview with a concise email and take this chance to include any additional points you would feel may help case.
By following these guidelines you are likely to have a good interview which may lead to obtaining a job offer. As you gain experience with interviews you will gain in confidence and before you know it you will have your first job. Good luck!
