According to official data held by the Greek Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change (YPEKA) and EWEA the overall production of energy produced by renewable sources increased from 1446 MW in 2009 to 1736 MW in 2010. The leading source seems to be photovoltaic energy since there was a huge increase from 53 MW in 2009 to 198 MW in 2010. At the same time the total gross installed wind capacity increased for 131 MW (total 1298 MW) and the installed hydroelectric power increased from 182,6 MW in 2009 to 196,3 MW in 2010.

In this framework Greece, according to EWEA, is thought to be one of the countries to exceed by far the targets set by the Community for at least 20% of the overall production by RES. EWEA thinks that because of these great results in countries such as Greece, Bulgaria and Spain, EU in general will produce about 34% of its energy by RES in 2020 (the original target was 20%) mainly by taking advantage of wind and hydroelectric energy.

In Greece the results are expected to be even higher in 2011 since YPEKA has given permission for the development of 1670 MW in total. The (rather conservative) predictions of the Ministry and the Public Power Corporation that is in control of the whole net, are for at least 300 MW extra wind power and 200 MW solar power in 2011. Finally more than 2000 proposals for new small photovoltaic farms by small producers have been submitted to YPEKA and the majority of them are expected to be approved in the following two years.
